Germany increases its contribution to the Global Fund by 30%, a major step to achieve the objective of ending AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria by 2030

Friends of the Global Fund Europe commends the announcement this morning by Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze of the increase of the German contribution to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria for the years 2023-2025.

Germany’s total contribution to the Global Fund for the years 2023-2025 reaches a total of €1.3 billion, an increase of 30% compared to the pledge made in 2019 for the years 2020-2022.

Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul, Vice-President of Friends of the Global Fund Europe and former Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development in Germany, said: « This is a very strong signal sent by Germany for stronger health systems in all countries. It is a very strong signal for community health workers across the globe and most of all for those who are affected by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. In a global partnership we can overcome even challenges like Covid. I very much hope that other donors will now follow with increases of at least 30 percent to their contributions for the Global Fund”.

On September 18-19, 2022, world leaders, private sector leaders, civil society and communities will meet in New York for the seventh Replenishment Conference of the Global Fund under the auspices of US President Biden.

The Global Fund has calculated that it needs at least USD 18 billion to fight HIV, tuberculosis and malaria, to strengthen health systems and prepare for future pandemics.

This target represents a 30% increase over the $14 billion needed for the years 2020-2022 and mobilized at the previous Global Fund replenishment conference held in Lyon in 2019.

Friends of the Global Fund Europe calls on European leaders to mobilize alongside Germany and the United States and show once again their commitment to making global health and the fight against pandemics a Common Good of Humanity.
