Every week, 5,000 adolescent girls and young women are infected with HIV in East and Southern Africa, twice as much as their male peers.
Over 11 million pregnant women were infected with malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, resulting in 10,000 maternal deaths. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to malaria.
The Global Fund’s new strategy reinforces the fight against gender inequities, scaling up programs and approaches to remove human rights and gender-related barriers, and leveraging the Global Fund’s diplomatic voice to challenge laws, policies and practices that limit impact on HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.
