Friends of the Global Fund Europe applauds the early announcement

of the increased Commitment to the Global Fund from EU Commission for 2017-2019

Paris March 3, 2016 — The Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven MIMICA has announced the increase of the European Commission’s contribution to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria by more than 27 percent to reach EUR 470 million for 2017-2019, reaffirming the European Commission continued commitment to global health and the Global Fund. As an international advocate for the Global Fund, Friends of the Global Fund Europe commends this demonstration of support.

“We are grateful for this expression of support for the Global Fund, and applaud European Commission’s strengthened pledge for 2017-2019.” said Charles GOERENS, Board Vice-Chair of Friends of the Global Fund Europe and Member of the European Parliament. “This early announcement of the European Commission – the 6th largest donor to the Global Fund – is a proof of confidence in the Global Fund and in its critical role to end the three epidemics by 2030. I am hopeful that it will announce a successful donor conference of the Global Fund in 2016, paving the way for more expressions of support and equally excellent announcements from other donors.”

“Ending Aids, tuberculosis and malaria is within our reach and with this announcement of the European Commission, we’re very pleased to see momentum continuing to build around the Global Fund’s resource mobilization,” said Laurent VIGIER, President of Friends of the Global Fund Europe. “Investing in the Global Fund is a right decision to multiply impacts in countries by acting with partners on the different levers that foster global health and development, in particular strengthening health systems and reaching the most vulnerable populations. In a time of constrained economies and increasing global challenges, this is a recognition of the tremendous work of the Global Fund and its ability to help turn the tide against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria”.

“Friends of the Global Fund Europe” works to end the worldwide burden of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. It educates, engages and mobilizes decision makers to support the Global Fund, the world’s largest public health financier.
